Virginia Aquarium

We love the Virginia Aquarium in Virginia Beach!  I think this was our 4th trip, the first being when Sean was just 2 years old.  It keeps getting better, too, as they expand their exhibits.  We went in the afternoon, at a time when we had it almost to ourselves.  There were so many tanks of beautiful and interesting fish that we've read about, or heard about.  Sean really seemed to enjoy seeing cuttlefish, longnose gar, huge catfish and snakeheads- not to mention sharks and sea turtles- up close.

Here Chris and Sean sat near this tomistoma (freshwater crocodile) for about 10 minutes and saw it only move a millimeter or so.

Jack was eaten by a great white shark -and not too happy about it!

Max was thrilled with buttons and levers to play with in this replica submarine command center.

One of the coolest exhibits at this aquarium is the ray touch tank.  The rays and skates swim/flap up near the surface to be petted.  They really are interacting with the people- some being more friendly than others.  They all felt really neat- soft and spongy. The skates had little spikes on their backs and the rays were smooth.  A very cool experience!

Taking a picture in this next has become a tradition.  We took one on our first visit (13 years ago) with just Sean and me.  Then we took another one about 5 years ago with Sean, Jack and me.  We needed another one, since we have a new bird in our nest, so we took the short hike out to the nest just before the museum closed.  Now, it may look like the nest still has some room, but it's actually wonderfully full.  And I'm relishing this time, since I'm not looking forward to when it's empty!

The Beach

Max's first trip to the beach!  He lit up when we saw the waves from our balcony, and he liked the playing with the sand on the beach.  But, he wasn't crazy about the waves when he got closer. He ran from them and was upset when Sean, Jack and Chris were playing in them.  I seem to remember Sean and Jack reacting the same way at his age.  I understand- the ocean can be overwhelming!

I love these guys!!

Mother's Day Outing

The boys and I went to the JMU Arboretum yesterday at my request as a way to celebrate Mother's Day.  We saw lots of life- this floating raft of turtles, mama and baby ducks, snails, and lots of flowers and trees.  We bounced on the swinging bridge, found snails in the stream and tasted redbud pods.  I cherished hanging out with my boys and watching them each enjoy the trip in their own way.  I truly love being a mom!

Annual Croquet Party

The Griscoms held their annual croquet party on a Sunday evening at the tail end of a rainy weekend.  We were all happy to be outside and enjoying this bug-free time of the year.  There were 3 little ones toddling around, but the neighbors managed to get the balls through the wickets successfully.

Jack and Liam waiting their turns to hit.

Brothers

Evening Fires

Chris snapped these one night that the 3 of them built a fire after Max and I had gone to bed.  We've really been enjoying the fire pit that is tucked into a small corner of our yard.

Hunger Games Reenactment

Jack organized a Hunger Games reenactment/competition for his friends who were fans of the book.  They used Nerf weapons, fought to the "death"- with the survivor winning a bag of candy.  All the participants had a blast and replayed winning moves over the days that followed.

Sean's Birthday Hike

We celebrated Sean's 15th birthday with a hike to Dark Hollow Falls, in Shenandoah National Park.  it was a perfect day for a hike and there were lots of salamander and fern sightings (2 things Sean wanted to see).

There were lots of spots along the way where we could explore in the stream, so we meandered our way to the waterfall.

We made it to the falls, where we rested and ate Cheetos.

Here are Jack and Chris after some rock climbing.

As we drove in Sean called out "There was a Luna moth back there!". We all missed it then, but stopped on the way out to get a better look.  What an incredible insect!!
(Can you see the photographer in the upper right corner??)

The Morning After

Sean had a birthday sleepover with Alex and Eric a week before his birthday.  Chris got them out of bed with homemade pancakes, bacon and a fire in the backyard.  It was a beautiful spring morning.

Froggie boots

Nothing cuter than a half-naked toddler in froggie boots!
