Walking!

Max has been walking for about a month now.  Today he's walking around like a pro.  This video was taken a couple weeks ago when he was just getting the hang of it.  Even though I watched Sean and Jack learn to walk, as well as other kids I've cared and known, it still amazed me to watch Max's determination to keep trying at something that was so challenging and frequently painful.

Gingerbread House

Sean and Jack's gingerbread house of the season.  We bought a pre-built house, which ended up being disappointing because it was broken.  But, they repaired it and then decorated it, and seemed to enjoy the whole process.  Decorating gingerbread houses have become an annual tradition in our home.

Paperwhites

I love seeing these delicate flower peeking up over the back of the couch.  They remind me of what's to come in a few short months.

Window Stars

This Christmas Jack and I learned how to make window stars using kite paper.  They are addictive!  It's been fun trying different color combinations and different patterns.  And when the sun shines I run around the house looking to see how the stars are shining.  I also enjoyed making them for family and friends to give as little holiday gifts.  Below are some of my favorites that are on my windows.

Cutting down the Christmas Tree

This was our best Christmas tree gathering day ever!  We got along so well and worked together to find a tree that we were all happy with.  Chris and I kept glancing at each other to say "Wow, this is fun!"  Once we picked out the perfect tree (dismissing ones with weird chicken feet tops, and strange insect pods growing in them) Chris, Sean and Jack cut the tree down.

Jack really did have  fun, even though it doesn't look like it in this picture. :)

Jack and Max watching the tree come in.

Bring in the tree!

Max's favorite hat

Sonya passed down this hat to Max and he loves it!  Since he has masted the use of his hands, at about 6 months old, he has pulled all hats off his head.  So I was surprised when I put this hat on his head an it stayed put.  Max looked at himself in the mirror, smiled and gave me a look like "Now, this is my kind of hat!".

As you can see, its getting harder to take pictures of Max now that he's walking and is very interested in the camera.

Max

A few pictures of Max playing around.  Our camera is having issues so I haven't been taking as many pictures lately.  But, I decided I needed to take some to capture the ordinary moments.  As you can see, most of these pictures are of Max.  That's because the older boys aren't too excited about me taking pictures of them.  In the new year I hope to get a new camera and take more everyday pictures of all the family members.

Turnip Art

I thought this was so cool!  I cut the stem off a bunch of turnips and found this beautiful design.  I loved the patters on the stems.
Beauty and math in nature.

Max and Cousin Alli

Thanksgiving day and Max and Alli enjoyed hanging out together. Actually, Max enjoyed hanging out with everyone!  He seemed to enjoy the house full of people and all the attention he received.
It was a great day for all of us!

Small spaces

Max discovered this cabinet and, upon emptying it of its pots and pans, climbed right in.
Oh, to be that little again!

Max's First Birthday!

Max is one-year old!
What a fast year that was!  We had a simple birthday celebration with a few gifts and some pumpkin bread.  We were all reminded how little it takes to make a 1-year old happy.  He seemed to enjoy his birthday celebration much more than the rest of us ever do.  And it certainly wasn't about the presents-as he only received a book, a homemade felt ball, and an old wipes container filled with fabric scraps (since he loves playing with any wipes container).

Getting some present opening help from Jack.

Enjoying the pumpkin bread- one piece at a time.

11-11-11

Sean, Jack and I counted down a special mathematical calendar moment- 11:11 on 11/11/11.  It was a special moment, especially since we realized it wouldn't happen again for another 100 years.  At 11:11 we each silently made a special wish.

New Market Battlefield Trip

We went on a field trip to the New Market Battlefield.  We participated in the soldier program, so we learned a lot about the VMI cadets who helped the Confederate Army win this battle.  Here the "soldiers in training" are marching across the field- just as the VMI cadets did in 1864.  Ahead you can see the Bushong farm, which was situated in the middle of the battle and served as a hospital.

Family Nature Walk (not a hike!)

The 5 of us took a short nature walk in Paul State Forest on a beautiful November afternoon.  Jack has an aversion to hikes, and wasn't excited about going, but he was willing to join us on this walk.  In the end, I think we all had a nice time.  Sean taught Jack how to whistle through an acorn cap; and we found some gorgeous leaves to bring home.   I loved having the 5 of us together on such a beautiful day and am hoping we can do it again sometime soon.

Halloween Fun!

The Alderfer Fisher Family held a Halloween Party on Halloween and it was so much fun!
This first picture shows how Max arrived- asleep and with his hand in his snack cup.
(No significant meaning- I just thought it was a cute picture.)

I was so impressed with all the decorations and food.  Notice the detailed placeholder!

My little pumpkin!  Even Max got prizes that day- maybe for being the cutest. :)

Sean won the "Guess the Candy Corn" game and got to take home 301 pieces candy corn.

11 months old - the countdown to Max's first birthday

It's amazing how much we all learn in that first year!  Months ago Max was working so hard at getting his hands to move the way he wanted.  Now he can pick something up and put it right into his mouth.  Everyone keeps saying his becoming a big boy, but of course he's still my baby.

Brother Fun

A Visit to Nanny's

Our homeschool group went on a field trip to the Green Bank Observatory in late October.  The boys and I stayed at Nanny and Tony's house, where Max had lots of fun exploring.

Ready for a walk

Tissue fun!

Max crawled over to the windowsill and got a box of tissues.  He was thrilled and spent about 30 minutes pulling out the tissues and tearing them up.  My first thought was to take the box away so that he didn't make a mess, but then I realized that he was having safe, clean fun and that it would be a cinch to clean up when he was done.
A perfect example of how he's benefiting from being a third child!

Pumpkin Patch 2011

Max's first trip to the pumpkin patch!

Eric and Alex joined us

Having a blast on the hayride

Hanging on to Jack's huge pumpkin on the ride back

Musical Max

Max loves playing around with Jack's keyboard.  He has fun pressing the keys and bounces to the beat of programmed songs.  We're wondering if we have a musician in the family.

Cooking with beautiful autumn vegetables

Max loves blueberries

Max's favorite food is blueberries- thawed frozen ones that were picked (with love) by Nanny, Tony and Ally. :)

Jack's Birthday

Jack woke up to presents and donuts- happy birthday boy!

Pumpkin had fun, too.

Max's first concert

Max's first concert was The Avett Brothers in Charlottesville.  He slept through most of it, with the help of ear plugs.  Before he fell asleep, though, he bobbed along with the music and smiled at people around us.
